Kim Washington serves as the Diversity & Inclusion Manager, a position she has held since April 2019. She provides thought leadership, develops strategy, and aligns initiatives to promote diversity, equity and inclusion to achieve business results. Washington is responsible for leveraging the work of employees and diversity councils, development and delivery of effective training and other DE&I communication and awareness efforts.
Washington has more than 19 years of experience in the Southern Company system. She began her career at Gulf Power in 2002 and served in various leadership roles including Maintenance Team Leader, Operations Team Leader, and Fuels Unit Owner at Plant Crist. In 2010 she was named Electrical & Instrumentation Team Leader at Alabama Power’s Plant Barry and served as Outage Planning Team Leader. In 2012 she advanced to Compliance & Support Manager at Plant Gaston. Washington joined Mississippi Power in 2014 as Compliance & Support Manager at Plant Daniel and later became the Engineering Manager in 2017. Washington was a member of the 2019 Mississippi Power Contract Negotiations Team.
Washington holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Florida A&M University and a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of West Florida. She is also a Certified Diversity Professional and Intercultural Development Inventory Qualified Administrator.
In 2017, Washington was featured in Diversity in Action magazine as a leading energy professional, and in 2018 received a Science Spectrum Trailblazer award at the Black Engineer of the Year (BEYA) STEM conference.
Washington serves on Community Connection, the American Association of Blacks in Energy, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Jackson County Board. She is an iCan® Girls in Engineering mentor, overseer for the DE&I teams throughout the company, Co-Chair of the Gulf Coast DE&I Consortium, liaison for Moss Point School District and advocate for Parents for Public Schools of Moss Point. She is a facilitator for 7 Habits for Managers leadership training.
